Halloween is right around the corner, which means fun costumes, spooky decorations, and piles of your kids’ favorite candy. If you’re a parent, you know how easy it is to dip into your kids’ trick-or-treat stash “just for one piece.” Before you know it, the fun-sized wrappers start piling up. This is where the 80/20 rule can become a great tool to have in your tool belt! At LJW, we also like to call this the idea of “always vs. sometimes foods.” The foods that fuel your body and support your goals are your always foods, while things like candy, desserts, or a sugary soda fall into the sometimes foods category. Both have a place, it’s just important that we find a balance.
The 80/20 rule isn’t about restriction, it’s about flexibility. That 80% includes your lean proteins, colorful veggies, whole grains, and hydrating fluids that support your energy, recovery, and overall health. The 20% allows space for the things that bring you joy and make life fun, like your favorite Halloween candy. By practicing this, you avoid the “all or nothing” mentality that often leads to overeating or feelings of guilt. Instead, you create a sustainable rhythm that keeps you on track long-term while enjoying some sweet treats with your kiddos on Halloween!
So this Halloween, instead of stressing about the candy bowl, think about where it fits into your 80/20 balance. Enjoy a piece or two of your favorites guilt-free, then refocus on your nutrient-dense meals and movement the rest of the day. Consistency is what moves the needle, not one night of chocolate and candy corn. Remember, it’s not about perfection, it’s about balance and consistency. What you do MOST of the time matters more than what you do sometimes. With the 80/20 mindset (or always vs. sometimes foods), Halloween can be both fun and fit!
Happy Halloween LJW Fam,
Lexi G
