Why is Everyone Talking About a Step Goal?!
When was the last time you heard “I gotta get my step goal”! Probably pretty recently if I had to guess. With the warm weather, most people are out chasing a certain number of steps to hit on their watch. Myself included! But if you have never learned the “why” behind a step goal, you might think we all sound a little crazy! So let's chat about it!
What Is a Step Goal?
A step goal is simply a target number of steps you aim to reach each day. Most people track their steps using a smartwatch, fitness tracker, or even the health app on their phone.
What makes step goals so effective is their simplicity. There are no complicated workout plans to follow and no special equipment required. You just move your body more throughout the day.
For many women, especially busy moms juggling work, kids, and household responsibilities, a step goal provides a realistic way to stay active in between your LJW Workouts, even when life gets hectic.
Why Step Goals Matter for Your Health
As a trainer with Lexi J Wellness, I love step goals because they encourage consistency without feeling overwhelming.
Research continues to show that increasing your daily step count is associated with meaningful health benefits. A large 2025 review found that higher daily step counts were linked with lower risks of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, dementia, depression, falls, and premature death. Researchers found that even moving from very low activity levels to around 7,000 steps per day was associated with significant health improvements.
One of my favorite things about step goals is that they remind us that movement doesn't only happen during workouts. The 28 minutes you spend exercising is important, but what you do during the other hours of your day matters too.
Think of your step goal as a way to fill in the gaps between workouts and keep your body moving consistently.
The Benefits Go Beyond Physical Health
The physical benefits are impressive, but honestly, the mental benefits might be my favorite part.
Have you ever gone for a walk when you were stressed, overwhelmed, or stuck in a bad mood? Chances are you felt at least a little better afterward.
Walking gives you an opportunity to clear your mind, get fresh air, and create space from whatever is demanding your attention. Many women tell me that their daily GYAO session becomes one of the few moments in the day that belongs entirely to them.
Simple Ways to Increase Your Daily Steps
If the thought of adding thousands of extra steps sounds overwhelming, don't worry. Small changes add up quickly.
Here are some easy ways to increase your step count throughout the day:
-
Park Farther Away
-
Walk Between Workout Sets
-
Take a Five-Minute Walk After Meals (GREAT for digestion too😉)
-
Walk During Phone Calls
-
Walk While Watching TV
-
Turn Chores Into Movement
What Should Your Step Goal Be?
If you have made it this far, you’re probably wondering what YOUR step goal should be.
The truth is that there isn't one perfect number that works for everyone.
Your step goal should match your current lifestyle and fitness level. A woman averaging 3,500 steps per day shouldn't feel pressured to suddenly jump to 10,000.
Instead, track your current steps for a week and find your average. Then increase that number by about 1,000 to 2,000 steps per day.
This approach works because it meets you where you are.
When goals feel achievable, you're much more likely to stay consistent. Consistency creates momentum, and momentum creates long-term results.
You don't need a perfect number.
You just need a starting point.
If you're already doing quick at home workouts for women, adding a manageable step goal can be one of the simplest ways to increase your overall activity level and support your progress.
Now if you'll excuse me, I've been sitting here writing this for a while, and it's probably time for me to get up and go for a walk.
Happy stepping!
