Building a Plate Without Tracking Macros
No stress. No guilt. No overthinking. No rocket science required, my friends. Just simple balance for a rainbow plate surrounded by protein.
You do not have to track every bite to make a balanced choice.
Sometimes life happens. You’re at a BBQ, on vacation, eating with family, or just not in the mood to pull out your food scale. (Yes, I said it as a nutrition coach. Of course, weighing it preferred.) That does not mean you failed. It just means we use a simple plate-building method instead.
The goal is not perfect tracking. The goal is to build a plate with awareness.
1) Start With Protein
You guessed it! Center goal is--Protein is the anchor of your plate.
Before you add all the sides, ask yourself:
“Where is my protein?”
Good protein options at a BBQ may include:
-
Grilled chicken
-
Burger patty
-
Turkey burger
-
Steak
-
Pork tenderloin
-
Shrimp
-
Salmon or fish
-
Chicken kabobs
-
Greek yogurt dip
-
Cottage cheese dip
-
Chicken salad or tuna salad
-
High-protein veggie burger
Pick your protein first, then build the rest of your plate around it.
Add a Carb You Actually Want
Carbs are NOT BAD. They are your fuel, like your car to keep running smoothly. They give your body energy and help your meal feel satisfying.
Instead of grabbing a little bit of every carb, choose the one you really want.
Carb options may include:
-
Bun
-
Corn on the cob
-
Potato salad
-
Pasta salad
-
Baked beans
-
Fruit
-
Chips
-
Baked potato
Ask yourself:
“What carb do I actually want today?”
Pick it, enjoy it, and move on.
Add Fat With Awareness
Fats are not bad either. They add flavor and help keep you full. Fats help with hormonal support and guess what your brain is made of 60% of it. Thus, you need it.
But fats can add up quickly, especially at BBQs.
Fat sources may include:
-
Cheese
-
Mayo-based salads
-
Ranch or creamy dips
-
Salad dressing
-
Chips
-
Avocado
-
Butter
-
Sour cream
You do not need to avoid these foods.
Just ask:
“Where is my fat coming from?”
Then choose it on purpose.
Add Color
Color usually means fruit, veggies, and volume.
These foods help you feel full and add fiber, vitamins, minerals and hydration.
Easy options include:
-
Lettuce
-
Tomato
-
Pickles
-
Onion
-
Cucumbers
-
Grilled veggies
-
Side salad
-
Veggie tray
-
Watermelon
-
Berries
-
Grapes
Adding color helps your plate feel bigger and more balanced. Also, helping you feel fuller as well. We are visual by nature and even having a balanced meal that is visually pleasing can help you feel better too!
The Easy Plate Method
When you are not tracking, think of your plate like this:
1/4 plate protein
1/4 plate carbs
1/2 plate fruit, veggies, or salad
Add fats on purpose
Or keep it even simpler:
Protein first.
Carb you enjoy.
Fat with awareness.
Color for balance.
Example BBQ Plates
Burger Plate
Burger patty
Bun or half bun (OR NO bun)
Lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion
Fruit or corn
Cheese or dip if you want it
Chicken Plate
Grilled chicken
Small scoop of potato salad
Big side salad or veggies
Fruit
Dressing or dip on the side
Steak Plate
Steak
Baked potato
Grilled veggies
Small amount of butter or sour cream
Snack Plate
Chicken kabobs or shrimp
Veggies with dip
Fruit
Small handful of chips or pretzels
Before You Fill Your Plate, Ask Yourself:
Where is my protein?
What carb do I want?
Where is my fat coming from?
Can I add fruit or veggies?
That’s it.
No stress. No guilt. No overthinking. One day is not going to ruin all that you built. Life happens, enjoy and get back to basics.
Final Reminder
You can enjoy BBQs, family events, vacations, and fun foods without feeling like you are starting over.
You do not need a perfect plate.
You just need a plate built with intention.
Balanced does not mean boring.
It means you are enjoying real life while still supporting your goals.
