Ally's LJW Story: A Year of Lurking, a Meeting That Didn't Land, and Showing Up Anyway
Welcome back to another episode of the LJW Mini Podcast! Today we have Ally Henry back — one of our nutrition coaches and, as you saw in the last episode, the all-knower of veggies, macros, and all things food. This time we're getting into how she actually found LJW and what her journey to joining the team looked like.
How She Found LJW
"It's hard to even pinpoint like, oh, I remember that exact moment whenever I crossed paths."
For Ally, it was a combination of things — hearing through the grapevine, seeing people she grew up with doing the workouts, joining the Facebook group as a lurker, and starting to follow Lexi online. Then right after Lexi won athlete of the year at Summer Smash, something clicked.
"I was newly postpartum with my third baby and I was really looking for a new workout plan. I exercised growing up playing sports, but not super consistently following workout plans. So I'm like, okay, I'm postpartum. I want to feel better. I need more energy. I want to find a different avenue, a new outlet."
That was three years ago. She hasn't looked back.
What Kept Her Here
What kept Ally coming back wasn't just the workouts — it was the way Lexi talked during them.
"I love the kind of podcast style of the workouts. We're doing a lot of the same movements, but Lexi's talking about different things each and every time. And each time I felt like, yeah, I hear what she's saying. She's right."
She's not the only one who's felt that way. "She was talking to me like her message was for me almost." It's kind of crazy how she does that.
On the community side, the Facebook group stood out most.
"People are just always so supportive and encouraging. Even if somebody's had a rough day or maybe they're posting their post-workout picture for the first time in months and they're like, 'I haven't been here in a while, guys, but here I am.' And everybody's just so happy to see them. Genuinely happy. You can just tell."
"That's not common in the fitness industry. You never feel like people are judging you. Not even close to that vibe here."
The Real Story of Joining the Team
Ally's path to the LJW team is one of the more honest and inspiring ones we've heard.
She did LJW workouts for a solid year before she ever posted in the workout comments. She wasn't on social media. She just didn't, you know.
Then Lexi posted about an open position. Ally met with her — and didn't get the job. But what Lexi said in that meeting stayed with her.
"She talked me through the ins and outs of the role and like expectations, and things I could improve on. It is a piece of the puzzle to put yourself out there, to be part of the community, to be active on social media, because you never know who that's going to encourage to also take care of themselves."
"Whenever she put it that way, I'm like, okay, so it's not because I'm trying to be weird or cringe on social media. It's because I want to encourage other people to take care of themselves. Because that trickles into their families too."
So she started. Organically sharing her life — what had worked for her family, the changes they had made at home.
About a year to a year and a half later, another position opened. Lexi remembered that meeting. She remembered watching Ally actually show up and put herself out there. And she reached out.
"I think that is such a cool testimony to you and your commitment to yourself."
On Posting and Getting Out of Your Own Head
The conversation took a turn that was worth keeping every word of.
So many people hold back from posting because of what someone might think. Ally gets it — she was there.
"Nine times out of ten we're thinking about ourselves. We don't have time to think about other people. And if we do — who cares? You can't control anything somebody's going to say about you. So why try to change who you are to please somebody else? You're never going to please everybody no matter what you do. It's exhausting to even try."
And the other side of it is so much more powerful.
"Is there someone you can think of right now that you've actually brought to LJW? A bunch. Yeah. Because you posted."
People had reached out to Ally and said thank you for sharing. That it meant something. That it helped encourage them. That's the good stuff. That's the reason to post.
"Shift it from what is someone saying about me to who can I help? Who would possibly be better because of me sharing about LJW or my favorite recipe or whatever it is. It's literally the simplest things. You just never know."
One Unorthodox Thing You're Grateful For
Ally had to top her first answer, which she fully acknowledges she nailed.
Her answer: summertime.
"Is it weird to just say summertime? My birthday is in August. I love hot, sweaty summer. Just all the things."
That is unorthodox. Answer accepted. Summer, we love you.
